This is Why We Call Them Crazy

October 4, 2010 By Michele 2 Comments

Below the fold, you’ll find a video (if it hasn’t yet been pulled.)  First things first:  It is really bloody, really gory, disgusting, and should absolutely not be watched if children are in the room.  I’m really not kidding about that – it’s very disturbing.

This was a “funny” commercial in the UK.  People were so disturbed by it that it’s been pulled off the air – but alas – it lives on in the internet.  It’s about consequences for not reducing your carbon emissions – specifically the 10:10 project it’s advertising.  It was supposed to be humor.  I don’t see the humor.

And I’ll probably be freaked out forever by the words, “No pressure.”  This right here is why we say there’s an agenda.  This right here is an example of some of our deep down fears.  This right here is in your face.  If you have any inkling of advertising, marketing, and publicity, you know this was seen by many people before it was put on the air.  And they all thought it was OKAY.

    I can absolutely see how it would be objectionable, and probably not good for sensitive kids to watch.

    As a grown up, I thought it was effective, it caught my attention, and yes, some of it was funny.

    So, while I don’t think it’s mainstream PC/acceptable (obviously not, or they wouldn’t have pulled it), I don’t think it’s disgusting either.

    I feel like all advertising has an agenda – so does pretty much every group or political party or even individual people, and they wouldn’t spend money to convince you of nothing. And most of them play to our deepest fears or desires without being so in your face about it.

    Anyway, I hope it comes across that I respect that we have differing viewpoints and I wasn’t trying to be judgmental or anything, just to toss out my point of view 🙂

    @Kasey –

    I very rarely get comments that don’t agree with me here, so I’m glad I caught it. All new commenters need to be moderated, and so I approved. The reason I’m mentioning it is because THIS is the way to disagree with someone respectfully. That doesn’t always happen, and I’m glad you did it so I could use you as an example. Thank you.
