So, President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize.
This is something that I do not understand. I really and truly don’t.
The deadline for nominations were a mere two weeks after his presidency started.
To date, while he’s had lots of meetings, nothing has been accomplished. I’m not saying it won’t be – but it hasn’t happened yet.
An imperfect analogy: It’s like a freshman going into high school… The incoming freshman has signed up for all the right AP classes, all the right curriculars, has had numerous meetings about his plans with parents, teachers and counselors. And then halfway through his freshman year, he’s named Valedictorian. It just doesn’t work.
Apparently Hope and Change without bearing the fruits can get you an international Peace Prize. What’s interesting to me is that the actual wording of the announcement uses those buzzwords. This opens up the award to all of us “common man!” They’re passing out awards just for thinking and potentially acting on great things! In addition, I’m afraid that this might diminish the contributions of those who went before him and actually accomplished what they won for.
I do not understand the obsession with this man.
Thee and me. *sigh*
It’s just too much.
I clicked through on a BlogHer ad to this page because the title intrigued me. I hope you don’t mind if I comment.
I was confused too, because even though I’m a strong supporter of Obama, he hasn’t really done anything yet. But something he said in his speech to the press on Friday morning–that I’ve since heard repeated in other places–made sense to me. Frequently, the Nobel is given in recognition of work performed, people who have made amazing strides toward peace in certain conflicts. Sometimes, though, and there is a precedent for this, it is given as a way to keep the momentum going.
We don’t necessarily know about it here, but the international community is apparently quite impressed with the President’s commitment to opening up avenues to dialogue with the rest of the world. His speech to the Muslim world was one thing I heard mentioned as an example of what the rest of the planet is impressed by. The President seems to think that’s why he got the award, too, because of his potential, rather than his already demonstrated actions.
So in essence, what the Nobel Committee may have been saying is, “We’ve got our eyes on you. We’re expecting great things of you. You’ve now got more to live up to, but you’ve also got us on your side.”
Silly…don’t you know Obama poops butterflies, and pees rainbows?
Ug. That’s all I can say. I don’t get it either.
