As humans we are lucky enough to have senses; five glorious ones to be exact. Today though I want to hear all about the wonderful sense of smell. What are some of your favorite smells and is there a reason attached to why you like them so much? And in a two parter, what smells can’t you stand and why? (try not to pick the obvious ones we all can agree upon here, k?)
I really love the scent of citrus – it makes me think of clean, crisp, tangy things. Apple too for the same reason. Cookie smells, that cinamony sugary smell, make me feel warm and fuzzy. Same with coffee.
As for the smells I don’t really like… Well – the one that people probably don’t get is flowers. There are some that I like (scent wise – love to look at all of them) although the only one I know the name of is honeysuckle. Although that’s more like a plant. But the scent of roses, if too heavy, and carnations reminds me of funerals. And gardenias remind me of a really terribly mean piano teacher I once had who always had a bowl of fresh gardenias on the piano. Good Lord, she used to poke my hands with the sharp end of a pencil if I got it wrong. *shudder* HATE the scent of cooked broccoli (I eat it though, the taste is good to me). HATE the scent of cooked brussel sprouts – won’t go near them and think they’re a waste of good vegetable space. And the last one – ugh – liver and onions cooking. And fish is alright when cooking, but then the smell just LINGERS FOREVER.
It’s funny how scents trigger memories. For example – I know that when mom dies, Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew will make me think she’s in the room. Old Spice for dad. Funny. I have times though, where I don’t even know the association, but the scent will send me back in time.

This is probably not a typical one, but it is always the first that comes to mind. I love the smell of new money. I don’t know why. But when I get some from the bank, or I get some really new bills in change from a store I sniff them for a long, long time (once I’m back in the car) and I hold onto those bills as long as I can.
I am a sick, sick man.

It’s very true how some scents trigger certain memories. This can change whether you like it or not, too. Interesting point! BTW welcome, roomie!:)

Welcome btw, roomie!

I know what you mean about the scents triggering memories. Every time I smell a lady wearing Shalimar, I can just FEEL my grandmother’s presence!

It’s a beautiful posting.
The smell of Neril (some kind of a hair lotion) makes me think my late Grandpa is around.

So, so true. And if you like citrus, Bath and Body Works have some awesome citrus products – my current faves are the citrus scents in the antibacterial soap line – I could just stand in the bathroom and sniff the mango-mandarin all day long.
