Smells

September 26, 2006 By Michele 7 Comments

As humans we are lucky enough to have senses; five glorious ones to be exact. Today though I want to hear all about the wonderful sense of smell. What are some of your favorite smells and is there a reason attached to why you like them so much? And in a two parter, what smells can’t you stand and why? (try not to pick the obvious ones we all can agree upon here, k?)

I really love the scent of citrus – it makes me think of clean, crisp, tangy things. Apple too for the same reason. Cookie smells, that cinamony sugary smell, make me feel warm and fuzzy. Same with coffee.

As for the smells I don’t really like… Well – the one that people probably don’t get is flowers. There are some that I like (scent wise – love to look at all of them) although the only one I know the name of is honeysuckle. Although that’s more like a plant. But the scent of roses, if too heavy, and carnations reminds me of funerals. And gardenias remind me of a really terribly mean piano teacher I once had who always had a bowl of fresh gardenias on the piano. Good Lord, she used to poke my hands with the sharp end of a pencil if I got it wrong. *shudder* HATE the scent of cooked broccoli (I eat it though, the taste is good to me). HATE the scent of cooked brussel sprouts – won’t go near them and think they’re a waste of good vegetable space. And the last one – ugh – liver and onions cooking. And fish is alright when cooking, but then the smell just LINGERS FOREVER.

It’s funny how scents trigger memories. For example – I know that when mom dies, Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew will make me think she’s in the room. Old Spice for dad. Funny. I have times though, where I don’t even know the association, but the scent will send me back in time.

TITMT – 9/12

The acting world is full of household names. Harrison Ford. Tom Cruise. Meryl Streep. But today’s post isn’t about them. Today I want to hear about the actors who are your favorite little known gems. You know, the type that you love to see in a movie, but from time to time even you have to look up their names?

Hmmm… I know he’s not totally unknown, but I love Michael Rapaport. What’s funny is – my husband’s a gaming junkie, and Michael Rappaport has done voiceovers for the games. I’ll stop my husband – WAIT I know that voice! But he just has that touch exterior, sweet teddy bear interior, sensitive but still masculine thing going.

Also – now gaining fame – Mia Kirshner. She’s now gaining ground on The L Word, and The Black Dahlia. But I remember her as one of the cool badass chicks who tried to assasinate David Palmer on 24. Gogeous, eccentric, and erotic in one seemingly innocent package – which you just know is not the case.

Tommy Flanagan. He’s the scarred dude from Braveheart – the one who’s new wife is taken from the wedding reception for an English Lord to rape so the English can “breed them out.” Anyway – Tommy? Is just cool.

My First Crush

August 29, 2006 By Michele 3 Comments

My very first crush doesn’t really count. We were five and in kindergarten… Chad. Huge crush… but I hadn’t yet lost my confidence as I did later, so I solved that little problem. I could run faster – therefore, I ran tackled him, straddled him, and kissed him on the cheek… You’d think it was acid since, you know, “Eeeeewwwwwwwww Cooooooooties!” The irony is, he later became my first “real” boyfriend in 10th grade.

But my first crush in which I agonized was also in Kindergarten. Timothy. This was after I lost my confidence. Yes, in kindergarten – horrible embarrassing incident and the topic of a different post. Anyway, timothy had beautiful brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes. He was also Yoda. As in Star Wars. We played at recess. A girl named Kristin (the hussy) and I took turns in being Princess Leia, Timothy was Yoda, and Brent and Chad took turns being Luke. Lots of “You’re my hero” and lines from the movie (which I hadn’t seen, by the way). He never knew I existed. I eventually went to high school with him, but I don’t think he even knew that we were in elementary school together. He eventually became a wrestler and football player. I always had that little place in my heart for him.
