But aside from that, she's still completely normal

It’s official!  I am registered for BlogHer 2008 in San Francisco.  Thank you, work bonus.   I also went ahead and did my hotel, so no worries, even if I can’t find a roommate.  But I went ahead and got the double beds.

Just in case someone loves me and wants to share the cost 😉

Can’t do the flights though, until they set the schedule, but it’ll probably be first flight out on Friday, and then an early evening flight out on Sunday.   It’s only an hour’s flight for me.

Now if they could just update the bling so I could decorate around here…

BlogHer Here I Come

March 6, 2008 By Michele Leave a Comment

So, um, yeah.  Remember how I said it was a choice between our anniversary and BlogHer?  No longer the case.

I talked to Poe.  He wants to take separate trips.  Me to BlogHer in July, and him deep sea fishing in August.  A trip he was invited to the day I brought this up to him.  With tax money, this whole thing is doable – albeit incredibly panic inducing for me of the penny pinching fingers.

We’re going to do something low key like dinner for our anniversary.

Point is this:  I’M GOING TO BLOGHER.

Now.  Any readers who are going and don’t think I’m terribly annoying and maybe kinda maybe want to split a room?  How’s that for a sentence…

I’d rather not pay full price for the room, and split with someone.  But even that opportunity doesn’t come up, and I pay for the room all by my lonesome, ’cause no one loves me – doesn’t matter.  Why?

‘CAUSE I’M GOING TO BLOGHER.

No More Facebook

I’m done.  I’ve deactivated my Facebook account.  It is no more!  I just couldn’t get it.  All the applications!  All the little invites!  I never could tell what the heck I was doing.  OH NOES I just sent that to everyone!

I actually was nervous every time I signed on.  Over a stupid networking site.  I decided to deactivate, ’cause c’mon people…  I’ve got enough stress in my life.

You can still find me in numerous places (see my drop down above, and the right hand side bar.)

I’m not dropping being social – just facebook.

a little bit of squee

In this post, I’m going to be starstruck.  Please be prepared.

I’ve been writing online for 11 years.  Various incarnations.  Lost a lot of them.  Back then, I had free ftp and webspace on aol.  This was before the blogging platform was even thought of.  If you wrote an “online diary” you wrote it in notepad, did all the html from scratch.  You then ftp’d the entry to your server space.  And then you edited and uploaded your previous entry (so the link to “next” was correct), and you edited and uploaded your archives page.  Painstakingly.  There was no such thing as a blogroll.  Although pretty soon the webrings and burbs started coming about.

Flash forward to now.  I’ve never been one of the popular kids in the blogging world.  But I kept it up.  Writing about my life, my diary here.  And here we are.

I have another blog, which is my baby.  I shopped the idea to numerous networks, as I felt the topic was more important to get out to a larger audience then I could support with my readers.  Love you all as much as I do.   It took me about a year to find one that took me up on it.

Stay with me here, I’m jumping around.

So in the blogging world, there are some bloggers who are the creme de la creme when I think of the word, “blogger.”  There is a top five in my head.  One of which is Susan Wagner of Friday Playdate.  You may also know her from BlogHer, Mamazine, and Work It Mom.   She writes at a few more places too.  I mean come on!  She’s been interviewed on national TV!

OK, jumping again.

On my other blog, I have a Tuesday feature in which I interview and highlight other bloggers fighting the same fight.  Because I’d been reading Susan for years, I knew that she was fighting the fight, and thought I’d ask her for an interview.  Worst that can happen?  She says no.  So I wrote her.  I let her know who I was and what I wanted, and mentioned I’d been reading a long time.

Get this.

She wrote back.  Like immediately.  Not only is she doing the interview for the site…  She’s a lurker on this here blog!!

Squee!

WOOT!

Nobody in my life seems to get how cool this is to me!  Perhaps because they don’t blog.  So, I had to share this with others out here in the innernets…  Because SUSAN WAGNER KNOWS WHO I AM!

This is so incredibly cool to me.

There are only three or four of you that consistently comment, and I know who you are (**wave**)  But I know there’s more.  Do you blog?  What’s your blog?  Say hello!

And THANK YOU SUSAN!  You truly made my day.

I matter

**Please note: this is not a rant on nursing vs. not nursing. So those mothers who have not breastfed (for whatever reason) this is not about your choice. I did both nursing and formula, for different reasons both kids. So, please don’t write about that, because I am NOT revisiting that age-old debate. This isn’t about your choice. It’s about the image of the choice, and what’s being done to it.

I’m important. As a mother, I am worthy, and I count. The natural God-given abilities of my body in feeding my child are just that – natural. Not immoral. Not unethical. Not unhygienic. Not perverse. Not pornographic.

Seriously.

How can we, as a society desensitized to sexual innuendo, images, celebrity, tits, ass, etc. shoved in our faces every day by the media, then go and ban nursing videos as explicit – while still allowing the hot mom’s ass jiggling stripper dance.

Oh, excuse me, the stripper dance you need to certify your age – the nursing video is just banned.

I really really don’t understand it. I mean I’ve talked about how I feel before. I believe modesty and good taste are necessary. I also believe I should be able to feed my kid wherever I see fit – and a public restroom is NOT fit.

Banning nursing videos and images is not okay with me. Lumping those topics in with pornography is not okay with me. Making me feel dirty because I nursed my sons is not okay with me. Banning nursing videos and images while showing Britney’s cooch is not okay with me.

I am a mother. I matter. Don’t make what I do into something dirty when it’s not – perverse when it is not.

Here’s what you can do (copied from the LMJ):

1. Email congressional reps (link to http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ – enter your zip, and it returns all three addresses/home pages for your location) and Parliament members (link to http://www.canada.gc.ca/directories/direct_e.html – enter your postal code, and it returns addresses/home pages of Parliament members) and ask them to tell YouTube/Google that removal of the video is socially and legally unacceptable.

2. Create a short video (not breastfeeding) that is tagged and titled “Message to YouTube” (feel free to include any other tags, including League of Maternal Justice, Breastfeeding, Health, etc). and tell them what you think about this. Tell them that breastfeeding is NOT obscene

*Updated: We’re going to reload our video (with new music) in the next few days. If you want, hold your Messages to YouTube and you can make them as replies to our Montage! (Thanks Jenn)

YouTube is calling for these videos and we’re more than happy to oblige. Make sure to send us your YouTube video link!

3. Write a post and include these same directions on your own blogs and send us the permalinks (or leave them in the comments).

4. Return to the LMJ call to action post (where permalinks will be linked up) and post/vote for others’ posts on bookmarking sites.

5. Submit our press release to online media outlets and social bookmarking sites (Reddit, Stumbleupon, etc.), get your message boards involved, send to your local reporters, or any national news contacts.

To get more information, got to the League of Maternal Justice.
