Summer. Summer. It USED to mean long lazy days in which I would COMPLTETLY annoy my mother to the point she would drop me off – alone – at the community pool and come back at the end of the day. Sunscreen be damned. It meant staying up late. It meant camping. It meant mountains. It meant going to the movies in the middle of the day. It meant popsicles, and ice cream, and mom not caring, because it was really hot. It meant trips to gramma’s for HER pool. It meant using the barbeque. It also meant lots and lots of bugspray – bugs loved me.
Now? Summer is long. It is hot. I am resentful that my kid is getting a break but I am not (how much does that suck? yet another bad mother moment.) It means no air conditioner in the truck. It means no airconditioner in the house. Window unit? Ha! I scoff. The window unit doesn’t care that we’re setting records. Summer is juggling the schedule, now that we have one in daycare, one in summer school, grandparents toting to and from summer school. It means not barbequeing ’cause we don’t have one. No camping – no money for supplies.
BUT! There are popsicles a plenty! And Ice Cream! And movies with gramma (OMG, the thought of my mother dropping Joseph off at the pool at this age! I can’t believe she did that with me). And “working” with grampa. And two kids just enjoying life, and I can almost get it back when I smell that sunscreen as I’m putting it on them. Maybe, when things are eased for us financially, maybe I’ll be able to let go with the abandon of a child.

I wonder if my children will remember their summers as fondly as I did mine – I can remember running around unsupervised – but did I really? Or did I not notice my parents peeking at me from behind bushes?

Isn’t it amazing how things are different now than when we were kids? We used to walk 5 blocks to school but there is no way I’d let me daughter do that. Great summer post! Here via Blogging Chicks!

My mom didn’t see us between tuna sandiwches and suppertime…
The difference being was the neighborhood wasn’t afraid to point out the “bad” people, nor we were afraid to lock them up.
sigh… worlds gone crazy.

You might camp in the back yard with your kids. They will love it.
What supplies do you need? We recently started RVing, so I have lots of camping gear that I could send you.
Remember that theaters, malls, museums, restaurants are all air conditioned. See a matinee, hang out at the mall or museum. Go to a cool restaurant for a sit down drink.
I live in Texas. I could not survive without A/C. It was 110 in my car yesterday when I got in.
God bless. I am serious about the camping stuff.

First, LOVE your tagline under your title…speaks to my heart (lol).
Gosh, it’s a different world than when we were kids, huh? I wonder when you were a kid (aka how much younger you are than me)… I remember going to Y camp and seeing the same out-of-town friends every year, sleeping LATE (can’t imagine that now) and the SMELL of sun-baked pinestraw and rain on hot asphalt making the world a sauna.
Love the BC summer theme, I’m having all kinds of flashbacks.

Isn’t it amazing how different our summers are compared to our children’s? We played outside in the street under the streetlight, till finally we heard our mom’s calling us in. There’s no way I would have let my kids play like that when they were younger!!
