I promised a while ago that I wanted to write down what happened at Joseph’s first baseball game for posterity.
Let me preface this by saying that this little team is STILL undefeated.
So Joseph went up to bat for the first time… And he HIT! So we yell at him to run, and he does. However. The action was all on first base. There’s the first baseman, the first base coach, parents kind of milling off to the side… Joseph decided he didn’t need to be in all that melee… veered right around the base so as not to touch them all – and then kept going. Out into the outfield. Needless to say, he was out, but that didn’t matter. He hit the ball!
His second time up to bat was a strikeout. That’s okay though. And when he saw we were all ok with it, and were still nice to him, he was all right with himself too. This is big for him, by the way, being the perfectionist that he is.
Third and final time up to bat. He ends up on base. Great. Next hitter… And Joseph’s on second. Great. Poe is 3rd base coach, and he tells Joseph to listen to him. Next hitter, and Joseph’s running for third. We tell him to go home, and he does! He makes it! He scores! He keeps going! He almost made it to third, before we stopped him.
You see, we all told him to keep going – but no one told him to stop when he got home.
